Cruise ships ordered for Costa and Aida

By Donna Tunney
Carnival Corp. has ordered three cruise ships — one for Costa Cruises and two for Aida Cruises.

The ships will be the largest constructed for the two lines. Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will build a 3,700-passenger ship for Costa, scheduled for delivery in October 2014.

The all-in cost for the 132,500-ton ship will be approximately $215,000 per lower berth.

Under a memorandum of agreement with Carnival Corp., Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will build two 3,250-passenger ships for Aida, scheduled for delivery in March 2015 and March 2016.

The all-in cost for these 125,000-ton ships will be about $200,000 per lower berth.

The second Aida ship will be Carnival Corp.’s first new delivery for 2016. The company’s strategy is to introduce two or three new ships per year.

Including the new orders for Costa and Aida, Carnival Corp. has 10 ships on order — three for 2012, two for 2013, two for 2014, two for 2015 and one for 2016.
