RCCL follows up stellar 2017 with an even bigger Wave

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., in the first public indication of how the cruise industry’s Wave season is going, said that it is unfolding well, with consumer demand strong, particularly from North America.

“The critical Wave period is upon us and is off to a very good start, with booking trends above the same time last year,” RCCL CFO Jason Liberty said during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “Booking volumes exceeded prior year’s levels for the past three months and we are once again turning the year in a record booked position.”

Liberty added, “Last year’s Wave season was incredibly strong, so we are encouraged that bookings are trending even higher this year. As a result, we are booked ahead of last year on both load factor and rate.

“The strength in demand we’ve been seeing for the last couple of months has been particularly evident in North America, with bookings up nicely for sailings on both sides of the Atlantic.”

RCCL’s net income for 2017 was $1.63 billion, up from $1.28 billion in 2016, while revenue advanced to $8.8 billion from $8.5 billion.

For 2018, the initial forecast calls for net income in the range of $1.83 billion to $1.88 billion.

Royal Caribbean lands Bonnie Tyler to perform on eclipse cruise

Bonnie Tyler will perform Total Eclipse of my Heart.

Google “Eclipse song” and you’ll find the lyrics to Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 pop hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

So it’s appropriate that Tyler sing the song on a cruise celebrating the upcoming total eclipse on Aug. 21.

Tyler, 66, will roll out her biggest hit before a performance by the considerably more youthful Joe Jonas-led pop band DNCE, best known for “Cake By the Ocean,” recorded 32 years later.

DNCE was previously announced as entertainment on the Royal Caribbean International’s “Total Eclipse Cruise” aboard the Oasis of the Seas. The addition of Tyler was a surprise.

The Oasis will be cruising in the path of the total eclipse a few hundred miles off the coast of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean on Aug. 21, giving guests an early look before the sun in eclipse reaches the coast of South Carolina.

The seven-night Total Eclipse Cruise sets sail on Aug. 20 from Port Canaveral, visiting St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Nassau in the Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean International will offer a special seven-night sailing aboard the Oasis of the Seas this summer for guests to witness the total solar eclipse on August 21.

The company said: “The Total Eclipse Cruise will feature a bucket-list-worthy viewing party with a live concert performed by a major headliner – to be revealed at a later date – to celebrate the celestial phenomenon that is poised to become the most photographed, most shared and most tweeted event in human history.”

“We’re set to take vacationers on an unprecedented experience that is nearly a century in the making,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “A total solar eclipse hasn’t crossed the entire U.S. since 1918, and with many of our ships sailing the Caribbean along the projected path, the stars aligned. Oasis of the Seas will have the vantage point of the century and an unforgettable celebration out at sea that adventurers won’t want to miss.”

The optimal viewing area along the eclipse’s path stretches across the country from Oregon to South Carolina before passing over the Caribbean Sea, according to Royal Caribbean.

On this trajectory, the sun will be entirely covered by the moon, and a moment this unique deserves an equally impressive experience.

Guests on Oasis of the Seas will be treated to a full slate of eclipse-themed activities, including dance parties, trivia, enrichment lectures, interactive science fun for kids, and tasty cocktails and dishes with names like the Cosmic Cosmo, Planetary Punch and Moon Pie, ensuring the most memorable and adventurous way to commemorate the Great American Eclipse.

The 7-night Total Eclipse Cruise on board Oasis of the Seas will set sail on Aug. 20, 2017.

Seven other Royal Caribbean ships will be in the Caribbean during the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21.
