Costa Prepares Gradual Restart Plan

Following the authorization to cruise by the Italian Government, Costa Crociere prepares to gradually restart its operations in light of the new protocols that will be officialised soon, the company said.

Michael Thamm, CEO of Costa Group and Carnival Asia said: “We are extremely excited that we will be able to cruise again soon and we want to thank the Italian Government and all the authorities for their constant availability and support.

“The cruise industry and Costa specifically, as the only Italian cruise company, create significant value to the economy and to the destinations we visit. The gradual restart of our operations will give relief to the local economies in port communities and to the whole ecosystem of almost 5,000 suppliers and business partners, and over 7,500 travel agents, in Italy, who have been suffering from the pause of our activities.

“The resumption of our operations in this phase is also a great responsibility towards our guests, our crew members and the residents of the communities we visit. In the next days, we will be working closely with national and local authorities, ports and terminals, RINA and internally onboard our ships, for the full implementation of the protocols issued by the Italian Government so we can all together guarantee a smooth, well organized and safe restart of our cruises, both onboard and ashore. Carnival Cruise Line today announced it had sold the Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Inspiration. A buyer was not named.

Meanwhile, the Carnival Fascination and Carnival Imagination will move to a long term lay-up status, with no specific timeline identified for a return to operation.

The company also announced that its second Excel-class ship will join the fleet in November 2022 from Meyer Turku and sail out of PortMiami as previously announced.

The Carnival Sensation will move from Miami to Mobile and take up itineraries previously assigned to the Carnival Fantasy and Carnival Fascination, with guests on those two ships being re-accommodated on Carnival Sensation.

The Carnival Sunrise will move from Port Everglades to PortMiami and assume the itineraries previously operated by Carnival Sensation, providing a larger, upgraded ship for short itineraries with the many new features installed during Carnival Sunrise’s $200 million transformations completed in 2019. Guests booked on the Sunrise itineraries from Port Everglades will be automatically moved to sailings from PortMiami.

The Carnival Fascination’s itineraries from San Juan and Barbados have been cancelled for 2020-2021 as the cruise line focuses its return to operations on mainland drive markets in the U.S., the company said.

Itineraries for the Carnival Imagination and Carnival Inspiration from Long Beach have been cancelled through Apr. 19, 2021. Carnival Panorama will continue to operate 7-day cruises from Long Beach while Carnival Miracle will operate shorter itineraries from San Diego to Baja Mexico.

The Carnival Radiance will now move directly from Europe after its $200 million transformations and homeport in Long Beach in April of 2021, where it will assume the short Baja Mexico itineraries previously served by the Carnival Imagination and Carnival Inspiration. Guests booked on Carnival Imagination and Carnival Inspiration after April 22, 2021, will be re-accommodated on Carnival Radiance.

Carnival also said it notified its Australian guests that it has extended its pause of operations in that country, and has cancelled six cruises scheduled to operate between Sept. 25 and Oct. 29, 2020.

“We have used this pause in operations to think carefully about our fleet and to build a plan that gives our guests new choices and upgrades to current ship offerings,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “We have a great variety of ships across the Carnival Cruise Line fleet and we are thrilled to have been able to confirm a delivery date ahead of what we had anticipated for our second Excel ship, which is exciting news for guests interested in sailing from PortMiami on the sister ship to Mardi Gras! At the same time, we will continue to invest in the four remaining Fantasy-class ships that we are keeping in the fleet. We have many guests who prefer our Fantasy-class ships which work so well for shorter itineraries from smaller ports that cannot accommodate our larger ships. With a fleet that gives guests lots of choices in ships, homeports, destinations and features including a multitude of dining, entertainment and accommodation choices, we are very excited about the future for Carnival Cruise Line.”

Guests and travel agents are being notified directly about impacted sailings, guest re-accommodations and cancellations. Duffy thanked guests and travel agent partners alike for their continued patience, loyalty and support during this unprecedented time for the cruise industry. “With our future fleet plan resolved, we are focused on ensuring we are ready to return to operations once it is determined that the time is right to resume cruising in the U.S.,” she said.

During Carnival Corp.’s business update last week, a Wall Street analyst asked whether the brands that were particularly tarnished by media coverage in the early days of the pandemic, such as Princess Cruises, were suffering more in terms of bookings.

The answer was no. CEO Arnold Donald said that not only was Princess not doing worse than other Carnival Corp. brands but was “trending with all the other brands in the industry.”

Wall Street might not understand this, but it doesn’t come as a surprise to travel advisors who understand how strong cruise line loyalty can be.

“What we noticed in our sales numbers is that Princess has remained strong since that incident,” said Vicky Garcia, COO of Cruise Planners, No. 24 on Travel Weekly’s 2020 Power List. “It did not affect them. Princess has a very loyal following, so they almost went into a reactionary mode and said, ‘I’m going to be even more loyal because they got so beat up.’ They were so loyal they wanted to defend and support it.”

In fact, Cruise Planners data shows that Princess 2021 departures are up 11% over the same time last year and almost 40% versus the same time two years ago.

It is this level of loyalty to brands and to cruise vacations in general that has cruise line executives confident that past cruisers will be the ones to bring the industry back once ships can start sailing again. It is that confidence that also prompted Donald to declare during the call with analysts that Carnival expects demand to be “more than adequate to fill ships in a staggered restart” with fewer ships sailing, citing the two-thirds of its global guests, 8 million each year, that are repeat cruisers, and the company’s active database of nearly 40 million past guests over its nine brands.

According to CLIA’s 2020 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook, 82% of cruisers say they are likely to book a cruise as their next vacation.

While that survey was done before the pandemic, UBS Investment Bank recently asked 94 cruisers in the U.S. about  their “inclination to cruise again” and found that, while the sample is small, the survey showed that over 85% of respondents are “likely to cruise again,” while less than 5% say they “will not or [were] unlikely to cruise again.” The remainder says they “will not cruise for a long time.”

Of the cruisers surveyed, 56% expect to take a cruise in the next 18 months, and 16% said they expect to wait until there is a vaccine. Expectations for cruising this year remain somewhat low, the survey found, with 13% of those surveyed expecting to cruise in the next six months.

Reliance on past cruisers and customer loyalty, however, will not long sustain an industry with more than 100 new ships on order through 2027, which Donald acknowledged.

“That doesn’t mean we don’t have work to do once we start cruising with much larger volumes of capacity to attract new-to-cruise,” he said. “Of course, we will have work to do, but right now the brands are strong, the bookings are encouraging, and with the staggered start we’re going to have in the resumption of cruising, there should be plenty of pent-up, latent demand with previous cruise-goers to fill the ships.”
