Smokey Robinson to play Carnival Cruise Lines

By Tom Stieghorst
Singer Smokey Robinson will be one of the new acts to perform on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship next year.

The R&B legend is scheduled for concerts April 21, 22 and 23 as part of Carnival voyages docking in Cozumel.

Carnival last year inaugurated the Carnival Live format in which well-known entertainers play on Carnival ships. The price of the concerts is in addition to the cruise fare but generally lower than a comparable event on land.

Next year, Carnival said it will offer the concerts at a new port, St. Thomas, in addition to Nassau and Cozumel. This year, concerts were also scheduled on Catalina Island near Los Angeles.

The anthem rock band Journey launches the St. Thomas concert series March 18 and 19. Other artists announced for the first half of 2015 include country acts Little Big Town and Rascal Flatts, and rock band Styx.

Carnival said the price range for the 2015 season would be $35 to $60 for general admission and $125 to $250 for VIP tickets, which include seating in the first four rows, an artist meet-and-greet, a souvenir photo with the artist and a commemorative concert pass.

Carnival Cruise Lines said that for the first time it has partnered with a sun care products company for an onboard promotion.

Cocoa, Fla.-based Sun & Skin Care Research’s branded sunscreen, Ocean Potion, will be available to guests on four Carnival ships in gallon-sized pump containers at sampling stations.

Carnival will have 90,000 individual-sized packets for distribution as well.

Sun awareness will be promoted on the large Seaside Theater video screen at the pool deck on Carnival Breeze, Liberty, Sunshine and Triumph starting Jan. 12.

Messaging about the sunscreen will be incorporated into various activities onboard and at select ports of call.

Ocean Potion products come with UVA/UVB protection ranging from SPF 15 to SPF 70.

Carnival Cruise Lines inks deal to use Dr. Seuss characters

By Tom Stieghorst

Seuss characters outside the Carnival Splendor dining room.Carnival Cruise Lines said it will introduce Dr. Seuss characters on its ships in a new partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises.

A Carnival Seuss at Sea program will include a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast in the main dining room with the Cat in the Hat and his friends.

Dr. Seuss characters such as the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two, and Sam will join guests at their tables for fun interactions and photos.

Carnival ships will be stocked with Seuss books, toys and themed activities and Seuss movies will play on the line’s Dive-In Movies big screen.

There will be a Seuss-a-palooza Character Parade and Carnival will build Dr. Seuss Bookville, a unique and dedicated Seuss-themed play space on ships beginning with the Carnival Freedom, which is undergoing a major refurbishment in May, and Carnival Vista, its 25th ship due in 2016.

Personal Note.

As a Brit who cruises on Carnival I hope they will try and explain who or what a Seuss is, as i have never seen over here anything about it. I have seen Cat in the Hat in Universal Studios Florida and didn’t quite get what was happening, this might be a bad move as far as a UK audience is concerned.  Royal Caribbean have got Dreamworks; Shrek and co., Norwegian Cruise have Nickelodeon; with SpongeBob and friends. Those characters are known worldwide and are understood by all, I wish Carnival all the best becaues they deserve it.
