Royal Caribbean seeking lifeguards

Royal Caribbean International has put a help-wanted ad for lifeguards on its website, according Cruise Law News.

The report features a screen shot of an ad entitled “Posting: Lifeguard Staff” that says the applicant would monitor swimming pools, the H2O Zone, Splashaway Bay and other designated water attractions. It said the job is a 1.5 stripe officer position within the Marine Department and would report to the Lifeguard Supervisor.

Asked about the posting, Royal Caribbean said the company does not have anything to announce at this time.

Currently, Disney is the only cruise line that staffs lifeguards at pools. Other lines have said guests swim at their own risk, the same policy adopted by many resorts and hotels.

Several children have drowned or nearly drowned in pools on cruise ships in recent years, leading critics to question the industry’s pool safety practices. In June, an 8-year-old boy was pulled from the pool on Anthem of the Seas after being submerged for eight to 10 minutes, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. He died two days later.

Royal Caribbean to invest $61M on Adventure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International will debut a new array of amenities on the 3,114-passenger Adventure of the Seas, after a $61 million refurbishment this November.

Originally introduced in 2001, the ship will be fitted with new dual racer waterslides, the Cyclone and Typhoon; a FlowRider surf simulator; and Splashaway Bay, a children’s aqua park.

The ship will debut a FlowRider surf simulator this fall.

New culinary and entertainment venues include an Izumi Japanese Cuisine; Royal’s signature steakhouse, Chops Grille; and Boleros Latin Lounge.

The ship will also receive an additional 100 cabins and a new Suites Lounge.

The Adventure is Royal Caribbean’s fifth ship to undergo revitalization, and will be the brand’s largest ship revitalization investment yet, Royal said.

The Adventure offers southern Caribbean itineraries from San Juan.

Harmony of the Seas to Debut New Aquatic Adventure Park

The Harmony of the Seas will debut Splashaway Bay, an interactive aqua park for kids, Royal Caribbean announced today.

The Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea touting a 100 foot dramatic plunge, The Perfect Storm trio of water slides and Splashaway Bay are the latest in a collection of activities.

Slashaway Bay will be a vibrant waterscape for kids and toddlers with sea creature water cannons, winding slides, a gigantic drench bucket and a multi-platform jungle-gym.

There is the Ultimate Abyss, a 10 story slide that begins in the Pool and Sports Zone at the aft of the ship down to the Boardwalk neighborhood below.

Spiraling five decks above the lushly landscaped, open-air Central Park in the center of the ship, water slides Supercell, Typhoon and Cyclone come together as The Perfect Storm, inviting travelers to slide into an adventure.

Thrill seekers can test their mettle in Supercell, featuring a champagne bowl swirling guests around as they descend into their approach towards a big splash finale.
