Celebrity Cruises moves Apex’s naming ceremony from Southampton

Celebrity Cruises has postponed the naming ceremony of new ship Celebrity Apex this month in response to the coronavirus outbreak, but two planned inaugural sailings are still to go ahead.

Apex was due to be named in Southampton on March 30 – the event would have been the first time Celebrity Cruises named a ship in the UK for ten years.

The Edge-series ship’s naming ceremony will be rescheduled to take place later this year in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from where it will sail to the Caribbean this winter.

The line’s two two-night inaugural sailing events, which around 1,000 UK and Irish agents have been invited to, are expected to go ahead as planned on March 28 and March 30.

A Celebrity Cruises spokeswoman said it would be insensitive to the wider industry for Celebrity to host the event when companies are dealing with the fallout of the coronavirus outbreak.

She added: “We [the UK] are still getting the ship first out of the shipyard, and we can’t wait to show her off to all our trade partners.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to celebrate our ship in the UK market, but it’s times like these where we have to be sensitive to the environment the wider industry is working in.”

In a letter to guests due to attend the naming ceremony, Celebrity’s president and chief executive Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said: “We always expected Apex to be an extraordinary ship, but the extraordinary times we’re living right now have come as a surprise.

“Those who know me, or even know of me, know that I’m not much of a traditionalist. One tradition I do cherish, however, is the tradition of launching a new ship with a groundbreaking naming ceremony, and a groundbreaking godmother [technology activist Reshma Saujani]. I believe the karma and energy around the naming of a ship and its godmother are important to its future, its guests and its crew.

“To that end, we believe that continuing with the naming ceremony in the current environment would be inconsistent with the spirit and intention of such an important and meaningful event. We have therefore made the difficult decision to postpone our formal naming ceremony until later this year and will name Celebrity Apex when she arrives in Fort Lauderdale to begin her Caribbean season.”

Additional health and safety measures have also been implemented on Celebrity ships, which have been subject to “special sanitising”, Lutoff-Perlo said.

Any guest, or crew member, who has travelled to, from, or through China, Hong Kong, Macau, Iran, South Korea, or Italy within 15 days of departure will not be allowed to board, including those who had connecting flights in affected countries.

For the inaugural sailings from Southampton, all guests and crew are to receive a pre-boarding health screening and anyone with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will receive additional medical screening and/or be denied boarding.

Lutoff-Perlo added: “While we find ourselves in uncharted territory and, as our captains will tell you, sooner or later everyone who sails into rough seas eventually sails into calmer waters. I know we are all anxiously awaiting those calmer waters.

“The health and safety of our guests and our crew are now, and have always been, at the forefront of everything we do every single day. These protocols are attached for your reference.”

Celebrity Cruises reveals details about the Apex

SAINT-NAZAIRE, France — Celebrity Cruises revealed new menus, entertainment and spa/wellness programs for the Celebrity Apex during a hard-hat tour at Chantiers de l’Atlantique on Tuesday.

Celebrity Edge first floated in 2018, has been a wildly successful ship, according to Vicky Garcia, COO and co-owner of Cruise Planners. But, for this second in the series, Celebrity didn’t rest on its Edge laurels.

“They tweaked things to be even better and different,” Garcia said during a walk-through of Celebrity Apex, which is scheduled to debut in Europe in March. 

Celebrity president and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said that as the company builds ships, “We make a lot of changes along the way. We do it because we want it perfect.”

The biggest changes with Apex, she said, involve the entertainment. 

Three new stage shows are set for The Theatre, along with new technology such as towering LED screens that curve around the stage to make the performances more immersive and exciting. 

The new productions include “Crystalize,” Which Celebrity’s new vice president for entertainment Lisa Lehr called “our eye-candy tech show.” It employs lasers, video, aerial acrobats and an underwater ballet sequence made possible by one of those new tech marvels: a towering scrim with eight 20K laser projectors that create a 360-degree, wraparound picture for the audience.

“Rockumentary” stars classic rock moments from Wembley Stadium to Woodstock. In a twist, audiences get to decide the finale by voting in advance using the Celebrity app.

And “Tree of Life,” a “feel-good show,” in Lehr’s words, features a 20-foot tall “tree” with more than 3,000 LED leaves. 

Meanwhile, Eden, the triple-deck, glass-walled lounge in the aft of the ship, will have a theme that changes daily, with daytime activities that are carried through in the nighttime entertainment. For example, a daytime guided meditation will be followed by a “Night of Chill” ultra-lounge concept with acoustic music. 

Another day, interactive art experiences will lead into “Night of the Arts,” with interactive performances. 

“Eden is beautiful, one of the most stunning spaces I’ve seen on a ship,” said Tawnee Sons, a Cruise Planners agent. When Edge came out, Eden had a “unique, artsy concept” that enthralled some but put off others, she said. Sons think the revamped programming there should appeal to a wider range of people. 

The ship’s nightclub, The Club, will provide more intimate, cabaret-style entertainment such as new takes on classic circus acts with aerial acrobatics. During the day, The Club will host all kinds of activities, from live-band karaoke to archery and dance classes. 

When it comes to dining changes, new and expanded menu offerings are planned in many Apex venues. 

Cornelius Gallagher, vice president of food and beverage at Celebrity created fresh signature dishes for each of the four main dinings rooms: Cosmopolitan (new American with international influences), Cyprus (Mediterranean), Normandie (French) and Tuscan (Italian). An enlarged galley enables expanded offerings in Raw on 5 and the Magic Carpet, the movable, a cantilevered platform that is the hallmark of the Edge series

The Fine Cut Steakhouse, which Gallagher said is Edge’s busiest speciality dining venue, will be getting upgraded proteins. And items will be added at the Rooftop Garden Grill, as well. (There, additional canopy coverings and screens will calm the wind.)

Gallagher also revamped the Eden menu, with an emphasis on flavour and local sourcing. For example, when the ship is in Spain, one dish could be fresh-caught, blazing-red carabiniero jumbo prawns.

A new storyline for Le Petit Chef, the 3-D digital animation in Le Grand Bistro, is also coming. Plus, Celebrity Apex will be adding the Craft Social Bar, which debuted on Celebrity Equinox. This casual spot offers draft cocktails, wines on tap and more than 50 craft beers served by a cicerone (a certified beer sommelier). Celebrity-style comfort food will be available  —  think mac and brie or Kobe beef sliders.

When it comes to the spa, a new collaboration with OneSpaWorld is creating broader wellness programming. Apex will offer F45 training, popularized by the actor Mark Wahlberg. The 45-minute sessions involve cardiovascular, strength and interval training. 

A new Women in Wellness program will highlight practices by noted influencers like Katie Brauer, yoga master and founder and CEO of The Yoga Professional, and Ruth Zukerman, co-founder of Soul Cycle and Flywheel Sports.

Local ingredients from visited destinations will be incorporated into a new Destination Wellness program. 

Joyce Landry, CEO of Landry & Kling Global Cruise Events, a meetings specialist, liked what she saw on Apex. 

“Edge is a beautiful ship, but when you create something new, you can have these little adjustments that elevate it to the next level,” she said. “Celebrity has done that with Apex.”

After four years of planning and a 23 month construction period, the 2,900-guest Celebrity Edge was delivered today at Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. At the same time, the yard laid the keep for the next Edge-class ship in the Celebrity Apex.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s Chairman and CEO Richard D. Fain and Celebrity’s President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo hosted a ceremony aboard Celebrity Edge, while docked in the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France. The Celebrity Executive Team were also in attendance along with shipyard officials, including General Manager Laurent Castaing, and 1,377 crew members from 72 different countries.

“The Celebrity team has done an outstanding job and I cannot thank the Chantiers de l’Atlantique team enough for delivering this game-changing ship and for their ongoing partnership,” said Fain. “Their work continues to transform the way our guests experience the world.”

“Today is a very special day for all of us as we have been eagerly anticipating this moment for more than four years,” said Lutoff-Perlo. “There are so many aspects of Celebrity Edge that are more groundbreaking than we could have ever imagined, and it is all a testament to the hard work, creativity and talent of everyone who helped bring this magnificent ship to life.”

Following the Celebrity Edge check-signing and delivery ceremony, attendees made their way across the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard for the ceremonial keel laying of Celebrity Apex, where a 762-ton block was lifted in the air and a lucky coin was placed on the dock before the block was lowered into position.

On November 6, 2018, Celebrity Edge will begin her transatlantic voyage to her home port at T25 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Her inaugural season will be spent sailing alternating seven-night eastern and western Caribbean cruise itineraries.
