Norwegian Getaway embarks on Olympic charter

The Norwegian Getaway departed Miami on July 24 on the first leg of its 40-day charter for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Details of the charter were provided for the first time by Landry & Kling, the Miami specialist in meetings at sea and incentive cruises, which brokered the deal.

Landry & Kling said the charter was first discussed in 2007 and is the largest in its 34-year history. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

The 4,000-passenger Getaway will take the better part of 10 days to get to Brazil before taking up residence at Pier Maua in Rio from Aug. 4 to 22. Chartered by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, it will provide supplemental housing for corporate sponsors and Olympic committees.

The Getaway’s departure leaves Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Sky to hold down Norwegian’s Caribbean cruise business from Miami in August.

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced fresh entertainment line ups for its two newest ships, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Getaway.

Due to the show’s overwhelming popularity on Norwegian Escape, For the Record: The Brat Pack – the critically acclaimed Hollywood night that celebrates classic soundtracks of motion picture masters – will be offered to an expanded audience as a complimentary show in the Escape Theatre beginning on 16 April.

As of 9 April, The Supper Club will feature an all-new dinner and live entertainment experience, with details to be revealed soon.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit After Midnight featuring Brenda Braxton will continue in the Escape Theater as regularly scheduled.

As For the Record: The Brat Pack moves to the Escape Theatre, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet will leave Norwegian Escape from the 5 March and will re-open on board Norwegian Getaway on 15 May.

Million Dollar Quartet is the smash-hit musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time.

Legally Blonde on Norwegian Getaway will close on 30 April and Burn The Floor will continue as currently scheduled.

From 5 March until 16 April when For the Record: The Brat Pack begins, the Escape Theatre will feature Vocal Over Drive, a contemporary pop a cappella group, before it moves to the Getaway Theatre from 1 May until 15 May, when Million Dollar Quartet opens.

Norwegian Cruise Line to offer ex-UK cruises for first time in seven years

Norwegian Cruise Line will have a UK-dedicated ship sailing from Southampton for the first time in seven years from 2017.

The cruise line will offer a series of 11 Western Europe and three Norwegian Fjords sailings between May 12 and June 20 and August 7 and October 16, 2017. Also available will be two shorter taster cruises.

Norwegian Jade (pictured) will arrive in Europe after a two-and-a-half-week dry-dock. Ports of call featured on its itineraries include Hamburg, Amsterdam, Zeebrugge, Le Havre, Alesund, Geiranger, and Bergen.

The line’s 2017 programme includes a total of five ships sailing in Europe, the line’s biggest ever European deployment.

Norwegian Getaway, which launched in 2014, will return to Europe to sail on eight or nine-night Baltic Capitals cruises to and from Copenhagen.

Norwegian Epic will sail in the Western Mediterranean; Norwegian Spirit will offer 10 and 11-night voyages between Barcelona and Venice and Norwegian Star will sail between Venice and the Greek Isles.

Norwegian’s managing director for EMEA, Christian Boell, said: “We’re clearly demonstrating our commitment to our European customers, especially cruisers in the UK, with these exciting summer itineraries.

“Not only are we offering the possibility to embark in Southampton but we are also bringing one of our newest and most innovative ships back to Europe.

“We’re convinced that this will encourage continued growth in the UK market, where we have just seen record breaking guest numbers in 2015.”

Northern Europe general manager, Nick Wilkinson, added: “I’m sure these exciting Southampton sailings will be music to our travel partners’ ears.”

New ship Norwegian Escape, which launched in October 2015, will spend summer 2017 sailing alternating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami on May 6.
