MAKE US WANT TO AT LEAST WANDER THEIR DECKS.

Cruise ships can be hard to wrap your head around. The enormous boats function as floating cities, catering to thousands of people at a time with every imaginable amenity. The ships are rarely appreciated for their design. Jeffrey Milstein‘s arial photos make us question our perception of these massive, gaudy ships.

The bright colors and fantastical layouts complete with pools and putting greens look more like space ships or amoebas than they do photographs.

It’s no surprise that Milstein’s images look nice – he shoots with a Phase One IQ180 camera, a device that’s usually used to shoot for fashion magazines and advertisements, and costs more than $40,000.

The camera is capable of shooting in incredible detail, with photos measuring 10,328 pixels by 7,760 pixels (for reference, the highly touted iPhone 6 Plus camera shoots images that are 1,080 pixels by 1,920 pixels).

Using a camera like his, though, means he only gets a few chances to take a good shot. Despite being a digital device, the complexity of these cameras means they have to be operated manually.

Cruises may not be in fashion, but Milstien’s rich shots make us want to at least wander their decks.

His photos will be shown later this summer at Benrubi Gallery in New York, starting on July 9, and Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles, starting on July 18

Norwegian Sky cruises to include alcoholic drinks in fare

Norwegian Cruise Line will include alcoholic drinks in the cruise fare on Norwegian Sky sailings, beginning in January.

The cruise line said that drinks normally priced at $11 or less would be included in the fare. That includes cocktails, wines by the glass, and bottled and draft beer. Guests ages 3 to 20 will get unlimited soda and juice.

“We’re taking Freestyle Cruising to the next level to provide our guests with an experience unmatched by any other contemporary cruise line,” said Andy Stuart, president and COO for Norwegian Cruise Line.

Norwegian Cruise Line promotion: Buy one, get one free

Borrowing from supermarkets, Norwegian Cruise Line has applied the buy-one, get-one-free promotion to a pair of its cruise ships.

Through May 11, anyone booking a seven-day cruise this summer on the Norwegian Breakaway or Getaway, the company’s newest ships, will also get a three- or four-day Bahamas cruise on selected dates this fall or winter on Norwegian Sky, one of its oldest ships.

The promotion, dubbed “Buy Once, Cruise Twice,” has some restrictions.

Holiday dates for the Norwegian Sky are blacked out. The promotion applies to sailings from Sept. 5 to Nov. 21, then from Dec. 1 to Dec. 15 and from Jan. 2 to Feb. 27. The Sky cruise is also nonrefundable and non-transferrable.

Breakaway sails from New York to Bermuda in the summer, while Getaway sails the Caribbean from Miami. Each can carry 4,000 passengers. The 2,000-passenger Norwegian Sky departs from Miami.
