STX Finland shipyard to be sold

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft and the Finnish government have agreed to acquire STX Finland from South Korea-based STX Corp.

Meyer Werft will buy a 70% stake, the Finnish government 30%. The acquisition is subject to clearance by antitrust authorities and banks.

STX Finland has a shipyard in Turku; a shipyard in Rauma was sold to the Finnish town earlier this year. The plan is to rename the company Meyer Turku Shipyard.

The Turku yard built the Mein Schiff 3, a TUI Cruises ship that entered service in June. STX Finland is currently constructing the Mein Schiff 4, and TUI Cruises this week reached a deal for two more ships of the same class to be constructed at the Turku yard.

STX also has built many ships for the North American market, including Royal Caribbean’s Oasis and Allure of the Seas.

Meyer Werft’s Papenburg yard built Celebrity’s Solstice-class and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway-class ships. The yard is constructing Norwegian’s Breakaway Plus and Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class vessels.

Norwegian Cruise Line orders ships for 2018 and 2019

Norwegian Cruise Line said it has ordered ships for delivery in 2018 and 2019 from Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard that together will cost about 1.6 billion euros ($2.2 billion).

The ships will be the third and fourth in the “Breakaway Plus” class that can carry about 4,200 passengers.

The first two ships in the series, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss, are due for delivery in the fall of 2015 and spring of 2017. The third and fourth ships don’t have names yet.

After all four ships are finished, Norwegian would have 17 vessels in its fleet, barring any disposals. It will have added ship a year from 2013 to 2019 with the exception of 2016.

Norwegian said export credit financing is in place for the two new orders, arranged and underwritten by KfW IPEX-Bank of Germany.

Norwegian Cruise Line takes delivery of Getaway

KevinSheehanBernardMeyer-GetawayDeliveryNorwegian Cruise Line has taken delivery of its newest ship, the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Getaway.

The Miami-themed ship will head across the Atlantic for initial duty as the Bud Light Super Bowl hotel, before sailing to Miami where it will start year-round Caribbean cruises in early February.

Getaway, which is being delivered nine months after its predecessor, Norwegian Breakaway, took Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard 15 months to build.

From Bremerhaven, the ship is sailing to Rotterdam, Netherlands, for the start of inaugural festivities, which will continue in Southampton, England, before the ship departs for a transatlantic cruise to New York.

Norwegian has two more ships on order, Norwegian Escape, due in the fall of 2015, and Norwegian Biiss, coming in 2017.
