Crew Advocate Pushes for Monthly Full Day Off

Crew advocate Rinell Banda has called on cruise lines to implement a full day off for all crew members, according to a post from CrewCenter.

Founder of Buhay Sa Cruise Ship and a social media influencer with over 900,000 followers, Banda proposed the initiative after hearing concerns from thousands of cruise ship crew members on his platforms.

The initiative aims to help crew recharge, increase productivity and ultimately enhance the guest experience.

In a video shared on his page, Banda called for action, stating, “To all the amazing CEOs of the cruise ship industry, I have a suggestion that could transform the lives of our hard-working crew members and make our ships even more efficient and happier places to work: implementing a day off at least once a month for all crew members.”

Currently, most crew members only receive partial time off. Banda suggests a full day off each month to address these challenges.

“Think about it: Happy crew members lead to happy guests. It’s a win-win for everyone! So, to all the cruise ship CEOs out there: Let’s lead by example and set a new standard in the maritime industry. One day off a month can make all the difference. Your crew, your strength. Let’s give them the break they deserve,” concludes Banda.

Crew Center has supported the proposal, highlighting its potential benefits for crew members and the cruise industry as a whole.

Anthem of the Seas Arrives in Singapore

Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas arrived in Singapore to kick off its inaugural season in Asia, according to a press release.

The ship will offer a series of sailings in Southeast Asia, ranging from short three—to four-night escapes to longer voyages in Malaysia and Thailand, among other destinations.

“We’re thrilled to introduce Anthem to the region and look forward to welcoming holidaymakers onboard as they embark on new adventures with Royal Caribbean,” said Chad Grospe, vice president of Asia-Pacific, Royal Caribbean International. 

“Whether it’s a short three- to four-night escape or a longer adventure to fan-favourite destinations across Malaysia, Thailand and more, every type of holidaymaker can look forward to a variety of experiences on deck, from showstopping entertainment to restaurants and spots to grab a bite with flavours from around the world.”

Travellers can choose among 30 voyages aboard the Anthem, including:

  • Three- to four-night getaways to destinations like Penang, Malaysia, and Phuket, Thailand.
  • Five-night Spice of Southeast Asia cruises with visits to Penang and Phuket, with opportunities to explore nearby attractions such as the Phi Phi Islands.
  • Eight-night Bali Adventure sailings featuring stops along Bali’s coastline, with access to cultural landmarks and scenic beaches.
  • Ten-night Ultimate Southeast Asia cruises, with visits to Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang and Bangkok, among other destinations in Vietnam and Thailand.
  • Four-night Christmas voyage, departing on December 24, 2024, with stops at Penang and Phuket.
  • Five-night New Year’s cruise, departing December 28, 2024, visiting Malaysia and Thailand for a festive celebration.

Disney Treasure Named in New York

Disney Cruise Line welcomed its new ship, the Disney Treasure, during a waterfront christening celebration on the Hudson River in New York City, the line announced in a press release.

The celebration included a light show featuring Disney adventures on the new ship, including “Aladdin,” “Haunted Mansion,” “Moana,” and “Coco.”

The tribute to the stories and characters was brought to life by a synchronized showcase of 1,000 drones set to a medley of Disney songs.

Jordin Sparks performed a live rendition of “Live the Adventure,” the original anthem of the Disney Treasure.

Bob Iger, chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company, said: “Since the launch of the Disney Cruise Line in 1998, our ships have become brand ambassadors that bring our world-class storytelling and the immersive nature of our theme parks to new audiences in new places all over the world.”

“This is an unprecedented era of growth for Disney Experiences and a dramatic period of expansion at Disney Cruise Line,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences.

“We are doubling our fleet to 13 ships by 2031 to bring Disney cruise vacations to even more families across the globe.”

The Disney Treasure, sister ship to the Disney Wish (launched in 2022) and the Disney Destiny (setting sail in Nov. 2025), will use stories of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney Parks attractions to offer new and guest-favorite experiences.

The new ship embarks on its maiden voyage on Dec. 21, 2024, followed by an inaugural season of seven-night itineraries from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.
