Top Carnival bosses reaffirm commitment to agents Two Carnival bosses have reaffirmed their commitment to agents and rejected claims that moves to make distribution more efficient were an attempt to cut out the trade completely.

Speaking exclusively to Travel Weekly last week, Carnival Corporation chairman Micky Arison and new chief executive Arnold Donald (pictured) said inefficiencies in the system in the UK and the US had to be addressed.

Changes made to agent terms, automation and commission in both countries have angered some agents and Carnival has already initiated a charm offensive on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the UK, potential earning levels
have crept back up and an Agent Matters initiative has been started.

Arison said: “Our goal was never to cut agents out or to not work with them, but to make this system more efficient so we can all make more money.

“As an operator, if you get a booking on your website, it’s efficient, but that’s a very small piece of the business. If a customer goes to an agent who has an efficient system, that’s as efficient as them calling our call centre. The worst situation is when an agent calls us because then you have two ‘call centres’ talking to each other.

“We were trying to get to a situation where the customer calls our call centre or an agent. In the UK it was also an attempt to control our pricing.”

Donald said the agent community was one of the key stakeholders he has engaged with since taking the role from Arison on July 3. “Travel agents have always been valued,” he said.

“You are always trying to tweak what you are doing to motivate and incentivise the behaviour you want so you can effectively manage costs so the money you are spending has an impact.

“There were some measures taken that aggravated [agents] and did not have the desired results but there was never a feeling that travel agents did not count or were not important.”

Carnival UK chief executive David Dingle said the commission changes in the UK were driven by travel agents themselves. “There were a number of long-standing partners who kept saying to us can’t you do something to stop us cutting each other’s throats by this competitive rebating.

“It led to this massively inappropriate behaviour of customers shopping around and agents finding it impossible to close the sale. Some agents were cutting away so much they had nothing to sustain themselves and we lost control of pricing as a result.”

Baltic Cruise- Dover to St. Petersburg.

We had sailed on 4 other companies (Costa, Royal,NCL and MSC) and between us have all ways said that there are good points and some great points in all the companies, example we like NCL Freestyle Dining, and MSC style, so joining Carnival Legend for the first time from Dover was going to be an experience, the check-in at Dover was the best we have ever had, we were on-board having a wee dram by 11am, that was a first for us. Legend is an exact layout as the Costa Mediterranea which was our first ship, happy memories. She is a lovely ship which needs a dry dock which she is having i Jan 14 (I think) before going down under, just to spruce her up a bit.

The food in the main dining room was excellent with always a Didja Ever option on the menu, which we enjoyed trying that something different such as Alligator, Frogs Legs, and Snails. The service was very good and a waiter dance at 7:15 in the evening, which they grabbed a willing volunteer in my wife, she enjoyed it and i enjoyed videoing the show for evidence and later brownie points when needed.

The show’s where the best we had seen on any cruise before, the dancers were fantastic, and the singers were top notch. Head of Entertainment John Heard was an excellent compare, and was always willing to chat when seen around the ship. the entertainers around the ship were average and we have seen better on the Norwegian Jade, there seemed to be too many quiz’s and not enough music.

The tours were well organised and seemed to be a fair price considering the tours of St. Petersberg and a train trip to Berlin.

The shops on board were the normal offerings such as a Logo/tee shirt shop, a sweet shop, and a top end Jewellers. The photo gallery was the largest selling the mandatory on-board pics, places of interest pics, and a camera and accessory section.

Overall I would not hesitate to join a Carnival Cruise again, and we enjoyed the company of our fellow passengers, especially those pesky Canadians, who we keep in-touch with. Thanks to all who served and cleaned up after us.

If anyone who sailed on the same Baltic Cruise as us, we were the Stars of the cruise from the Welsh Non-Romantic Couple.

Prior to its deployment to Australia in fall 2014, the Carnival Legend will operate two repositioning cruises: a 13-day Panama Canal cruise and a 23-day transpacific voyage.

Prior to these cruises, the Carnival Legend will undergo a multimillion-dollar renovation in which Carnival will add features of its Fun Ship 2.0 program, including the WaterWorks aqua park, RedFrog Pub and Cherry On Top candy store.

The 13-day Panama Canal cruise will depart Tampa on Aug. 17, 2014, and arrive in Long Beach, Calif., on Aug. 30.

The Legend will visit Grand Cayman and Cartagena, Colombia, prior to the Panama Canal transit. That will be followed by daylong calls to Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The Legend’s transpacific voyage departs from Long Beach on Aug. 30 and arrives in Sydney on Sept. 22. The voyage will feature visits to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea, French Polynesia; Suva, Fiji Islands; and Noumea, New Caledonia.

The two voyages can be combined to create a 36-day cruise.
