Hamburg Opens to Cruises with AIDA and TUI Set to Sail

The German port of Hamburg will again welcome cruise ships this summer as the German city is opening to tourism.

TUI Cruises announced it will sail from Hamburg on June 11 with the Mein Schiff 6, offering short cruises with no port calls.

To start, the German brand will offer three- and four-day scenic cruises and hopes to rotate in ports at a later date. Bookings are now open on the TUI website.

Carnival Corporation brand AIDA Cruises also confirmed that it will base a ship in Hamburg starting in July with more details to follow soon.

TUI CRUISES ISOLATES CREW AFTER COVID SCARE

Tui Cruises’ Mein Schiff 6 was the first cruise ship to dock in Greece since the pandemic. An initial dozen crewmembers tested positive but showed no symptoms. All were placed in isolation on board and re-tested, with the first six results proving negative.

Tui Cruises communications director Godja Sonnichsen said she expected all the second test results to be confirmed by Tuesday. She added all crewmembers were routinely tested before they boarded and entered 14 days self-isolation before starting work.

“On Monday morning we received positive test results from 12 crew members of Mein Schiff 6, currently sailing with guests in Greece, from an external laboratory.

“As a purely precautionary measure and in accordance with the strict procedures for resuming cruise operations, which have been agreed with the authorities in Greece, the persons concerned were immediately isolated on board.”

The ship, which was moored off the island of Milos with 922 passengers, was allowed to continue on its itinerary to Piraeus.

“Thanks to the extensive hygiene measures and clearance rules on board, there is no reason for neither guests nor crew to worry,” Sonnichsen said.

TUI to Add Mein Schiff 6 Back in September, Cruising From Crete

Mein Schiff 6

The TUI Cruises restart is going so well the company is expanding to three ships as the Mein Schiff 6 will sail round-trip cruises from Crete in September with port calls.

The first week-long sailing will depart on Sept. 13.

Guests will be allowed to take company-organized shore excursions in Athens, Crete and Corfu.

TUI said it will dramatically expand shore excursion capacity so all guests can partake. The ship is expected to operate at 60 per cent occupancy.

The Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 will continue with their “Blue Voyages” (no port calls) in the North and Baltic Sea, offering five- and seven-day cruises in September, according to the company.

For the time being all departures of the Mein Schiff fleet (departures from September) will require a negative COVID-19 test result (PCR test). The costs for this are already included in the travel price.

Before the new crew comes on board, they are tested for COVID-19 shoreside. Only crewmembers who have tested negative can come on board and then they also go into 14-day individual isolation on a balcony cabin before they begin working.
